Srinagar, Oct 26 : Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam, who once questioned the use of loudspeakers for the Azaan (the Islamic call to prayer), paused his live concert in Kashmir when the Azaan was heard from a nearby mosque.

According to the Kashmir Convener, the incident occurred during a large-scale concert at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar. This act is particularly notable coming from a singer who was previously at the center of controversy for his comments on religious loudspeakers.

Prior to the event, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha stated that Sonu Nigam’s concert would significantly boost the Union Territory’s tourism sector and provide a valuable platform for local artists to showcase their talent.

However, the concert had already received a mixed reaction in Kashmir. A large section of people called for a boycott, and social media platforms were running campaigns against the singer due to his past statements.

Public disappointment also stemmed from the cancellation earlier this year of an Islamic Ijtima (gathering) that was scheduled for north Kashmir, while this music event was given the green light. Some people conflated the musical event with the cancelled religious gathering.

A segment of the public called the situation unfortunate and questioned the authorities’ decision, asking why the Islamic event was denied permission while a singer, perceived as being at odds with religious sentiments, was allowed to perform.

A concert participant Umair told Kashmir Convener that the singer’s decision to pause the performance was a “winning moment.” He stated, “The singer, once criticized for his controversial statement, paused the show during the Azaan and resumed only after it concluded. This was praised by everyone present and sent a powerful message of respect.”

He added that the performance was “rocking” and also praised local Kashmiri singers Qazi Tauqeer and Rauhan Malik for their thrilling performances.

Another participant, Sameer, shared, “I initially felt apprehensive about attending due to the boycott sentiments. However, the moment Sonu Nigam paused the show was deeply soul-satisfying.” He said such events aim to provide happy moments for the people of Kashmir, who have endured much suffering.

A tourist from Delhi, Priya Sharma, told the Kashmir Convener, “I didn’t understand the words of the Azaan, but I understood the gesture. The way the entire crowd fell into a reverent silence, and the artist bowed his head… it was electric. It taught me more about the culture of Srinagar than any guidebook ever could. It was a moment of pure, unadulterated respect.”

Zoya Mir, a student, noted, “As artists, we speak of connecting with the audience. In that moment, Sonu Nigam did more than just connect; he became one with us. By honoring our call to prayer, he honored every person in that audience.”
