Broken Swings, Dirty Washrooms Spark Safety Concerns at Harwan Garden in Srinagar

Srinagar, Aug 13: Visitors to famous Harwan garden in Srinagar have raised serious concern over the deteriorating condition of the children’s play area, citing broken equipment and unhygienic facilities that pose serious risks to young visitors.
A number of tourists, mostly parents, told Kashmir Convener that several play installations including swings, slides, Seesaw, open gym equipment maintained by the Floriculture Department are in disrepair, making them unsafe for children. “Several installations are damaged, posing a serious risk to children’s safety,” a teacher from North Kashmir accompanying School Children said. He said he felt bad for stopping school children from using play equipment as it was risky to use those broken equipment.
The complainants also pointed to the “deplorable” condition of basic amenities, including public washrooms, despite the park reportedly being under outsourced management.
Tourists urged Deputy Commissioner Srinagar and Director Floriculture to make the care takers accountable and take early measures to ensure no accidents take place due to damaged equipment. They also urged the administration to take urgent measures to repair and maintain the play equipment besides improving sanitation facilities.
Visitors said they have also formally written to the concerned authorities along with Photographic evidence showing the damaged installations and unclean surroundings and hoping for the redressal of the grievances.
Director Floriculture Shakeel ur Rehman said they are already working on tendering process for the repairs and the work will start in 15 to 20 days. Regarding washrooms, he said some washrooms have already been repaired and work on the remaining ones will also begin soon.
