Pampore, August 1: To evaluate the progress of water infrastructure projects under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), MLA Pampore Justice Hasnain Masoodi (Retired) chaired a meeting to review the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission in the district.
The session was attended by Chief Engineer Jal Shakti Kashmir, Er. Mohd Taj Chowdhary, along with Superintending Engineers, Executive Engineers, and other senior staff from both civil and mechanical divisions. Field-level engineers from Pulwama, Awantipora, and Pampore also participated in the review.
Officials informed the MLA that 37 water supply schemes are being implemented under the JJM in the constituency, out of which 23 have been completed. So far, 17,099 household tap connections have been provided against a target of 19,073 rural households.
A new water supply scheme for Pampore town, costing Rs 506.47 lakh, has been sanctioned and work is set to begin shortly. Additionally, the DPR for Khrew town has been submitted to the Housing Department for administrative approval.
MLA Masoodi expressed concern over delays in borewell drilling and electro-mechanical installations, instructing engineers to resolve minor obstacles swiftly and commission the remaining schemes without further delay. He also stressed the importance of timely progress reports, strict adherence to quality standards, and inter-departmental coordination.
“Access to safe and adequate drinking water is a basic right and remains a top priority of the government,” Masoodi said, while urging officials to ensure no household is left out.
Chief Engineer Jal Shakti directed field staff to intensify efforts and achieve full JJM targets within the stipulated timeframe.
Speaking to Kashmir Convener, Masoodi said the meeting thoroughly examined all schemes. “Some were wrongly presumed to be functional, but upon review, we found certain areas are still underserved. Our engineers have done good work, but challenges remain.”
Masoodi also revealed that a project worth over Rs 5 crore will soon be launched to augment existing water infrastructure in Pampore. “The focus areas are now identified. I’m confident that by next year, the water scarcity issues will be resolved.”
