Jammu, February 26: A three day workshop on “Linguistics: Generating Awareness About Different Aspects of Language” organised by the Department of Linguistics and Literature, School of Humanities and Liberal Arts, Cluster University of Jammu, was inaugurated on Monday at M.A.M College.
The three-day workshop from 26th February to 28th February, 2024, aims to provide an understanding and awareness of Linguistics with a specific focus on the preservation and promotion of the local languages of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Inaugural Ceremony of the workshop held on 26th February was graced by the Chief Patron Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Bechan Lal along with the Patron of the event, worthy Registrar, Cluster University of Jammu, and Dr. Jatinder Khajuria.
The event began with lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the dignitaries followed by a welcome address delivered by Dr. Monika Sharma, Dean, School of Humanities and Liberal Arts Cluster University of Jammu. Dr. Reena Salaria, Head, Department of Linguistics and Literature laid emphasis in her concept note on the need and importance of preserving and promoting local languages of Jammu & Kashmir.
Adding to the event’s prestige, the invited resource person for the workshop Prof. Panchanan Mohanty highlighted the significance of preserving linguistic diversity since it is directly linked to the preservation of biodiversity. Resource person Prof. Imtiaz Hasnain also addressed the audience and delved upon the importance of recognizing the role that the knowledge of our mother tongue plays in our life and stressed upon the dire need to study Linguistics in order to understand language in a systematic way.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Bechan Lal presented the presidential remarks wherein he appealed to everyone to embrace their mother tongues as a step towards the preservation of our respective culture and linguistic identity.
Eminent dignitaries present at the Three Day workshop included the Dean Student Welfare, Cluster University of Jammu, Deans of Faculties from the Schools of Cluster University of Jammu along with Principals of all constituent colleges, Cluster University of Jammu and colleges affiliated to Jammu University.
The event was also graced by Principals of different government and private Higher Secondary schools of the Jammu region. Several students from the constituent colleges of Cluster University and other colleges affiliated to Jammu University also participated in the event accompanied by their respective Teachers In charge. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Jeet Singh, Faculty, Department of English, School of Humanities & Liberal Arts, Cluster University.
