Srinagar, June 30: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association on Monday thanked former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for facilitating the safe evacuation of over 1,300 Kashmiri students stranded in war-hit Iran.
The association credited Abdullah’s timely intervention and persistent advocacy for drawing national attention to the crisis and ensuring a swift humanitarian response.
In a formal letter to the former chief minister, the Association acknowledged his efforts in coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs and pushing for urgent action. “Your intervention at a critical moment brought national focus to the plight of students in Tehran, Shiraz, Isfahan, Qom, and Tabriz, and helped initiate their safe return,” the letter read.
National Convenor Nasir Khuehami also extended special gratitude to Nasir Sogami, Advisor to the Chief Minister, for personally overseeing the evacuation process. “Sogami Sahab monitored the entire operation from the beginning and ensured continuous coordination and timely updates, which brought immense relief to the distressed students and their families,” he said.
Khuehami noted that the evacuated students had endured days of fear and anxiety amid escalating violence. “The students faced severe psychological distress while trapped in conflict zones. Their safe return has brought immense emotional relief to their families across Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
The Association also praised Abdullah for ensuring dignified travel arrangements post-arrival. “Thanks to his efforts, deluxe AC sleeper buses were arranged from Delhi to Srinagar, enabling all students to return home safely,” Khuehami said.
