Poonch, April 25: In a humanitarian initiative aimed at improving the living conditions of the nomadic Bakarwal community, the Indian Army distributed sleeping bags and mosquito nets in the remote Salani area of Poonch district on Friday.

The effort is part of the Army’s continued outreach to marginalized groups in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in areas with harsh terrains and limited access to basic healthcare and amenities. The distribution drive witnessed active participation from local leaders and community elders.

With the onset of summer and transitional weather conditions, the Army provided sleeping bags to ensure warmth during chilly nights, particularly benefiting children and elderly members of the community. Additionally, insecticide-treated mosquito nets were distributed to help combat vector-borne diseases like malaria and dengue, which are prevalent in the region due to stagnant water sources.

Community members lauded the Indian Army’s gesture, describing it as timely and impactful. They emphasized how such support makes a tangible difference in their daily lives and safety, especially as they move through forested and mountainous routes during seasonal migrations.

Officials said the initiative aligns with broader government efforts to uplift the tribal population in Jammu and Kashmir and ensure their access to health and safety resources.

“This support strengthens the bond between the Army and the local communities. It reflects our commitment not only to national security but also to the well-being of citizens in remote and underserved areas,” said a senior Army officer.

The Army reiterated its pledge to continue supporting the tribal population through similar initiatives in the future, further cementing its role as a pillar of support in the region.
