Charwan Ajas Residents Protest Borewell Construction on Community Land

Bandipora, April 23 — Residents of Charwan Ajas in Bandipora district have voiced strong opposition to the Jal Shakti Department’s decision to construct a borewell on land traditionally used for community activities. The locals argue that this land serves multiple purposes and that alternative sites near the existing filtration plant are available for such infrastructure.

The community’s frustration is further compounded by the lack of progress under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). Despite promises to provide tap water to every household, residents report that no pipelines have been installed in their area.

In response to the concerns, the Executive Engineer of the Jal Shakti Department in Bandipora stated that the borewell construction is planned on government-owned land. However, residents remain skeptical and have called for immediate intervention from higher authorities to ensure that community needs are prioritised and that the borewell project does not encroach upon vital communal spaces.

This incident highlights ongoing challenges in the implementation of water supply initiatives in the region, with residents urging for more transparent and community-inclusive planning processes.
