New Delhi, April 21: In a moving and personal farewell, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi Monday paid tribute to Naib Subedar Baldev Singh of the 18th Battalion, Jammu and Kashmir Rifles (18 JAK RIF), who laid down his life in the line of duty at Kumar Post on the Siachen Glacier—the world’s highest battlefield.

The wreath-laying ceremony took place at Shraddhanjali Sthal, Base Hospital, Delhi Cantt, where General Dwivedi honoured the mortal remains of his fallen comrade. The gesture held deep personal significance, marking not just a formal military tribute, but a heartfelt goodbye from a fellow soldier and mentor.

Defence spokesperson said Naib Subedar Baldev Singh was enrolled into 18 JAK RIF in 2002, during Operation Rakshak in Kashmir. His association with General Dwivedi began in October 2003, when the now Army Chief took command of the battalion. Noticing his potential, then-CO Dwivedi handpicked Baldev Singh for the Battalion Signal Platoon, personally mentoring him as an Infantry Signaller.

Baldev Singh served alongside his Commanding Officer in numerous operations, earning admiration for his professionalism, courage, and steadfast dedication. Promoted to the rank of Naib Subedar last year, he continued to serve with distinction until his tragic demise on April 20, 2025, while posted in the harsh terrain of the Northern Glacier in Siachen.

Remembered as a cheerful and courageous soldier, Baldev Singh’s legacy is one of inspiration and unwavering duty. His bond with General Dwivedi, forged in shared hardships and mutual respect, elevated the moment of farewell beyond protocol.

The Indian Army stands in solemn solidarity with his family, saluting the life and service of Naib Subedar Baldev Singh—a true embodiment of honour, bravery, and sacrifice.
