Jammu, April 19: Indian Army has facilitated mobile connectivity across some of the most inaccessible regions of Ladakh, including forward posts in Eastern Ladakh, Western Ladakh, and the Siachen Glacier that is seen as a landmark initiative aimed at bridging the digital divide and uplifting remote border communities.
For the first time ever, troops stationed in extremely high-altitude areas such as Daulat Beg Oldie (DBO), Galwan, Demchok, Chumar, Batalik, Dras, and the Siachen Glacier now have access to reliable 4G and 5G connectivity. This development has significantly boosted the morale of soldiers deployed at altitudes above 18,000 feet, allowing them to stay in touch with their families despite harsh and isolated conditions.
An official spokesperson said this achievement is the result of a collaborative effort under the Whole-of-Government approach. The Indian Army, utilizing its existing Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) infrastructure, partnered with Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) and the Union Territory Administration of Ladakh.
He said the Fire and Fury Corps played a pivotal role in facilitating this synergy, enabling the installation of several mobile towers—including four critical ones in Ladakh and Kargil districts—on Army infrastructure. The initiative goes beyond improving troop welfare; it is a significant nation-building effort that is reshaping the lives of residents in “First Villages”—the last inhabited settlements along the border.
Spokesperson said the far-reaching impact includes Bridging the digital divide, Boosting local economies, Promoting border tourism, Improving access to healthcare and emergency services, Facilitating educational opportunities, Strengthening local commerce, Preserving indigenous culture and traditions and Curbing outward migration from remote villages
Among the most remarkable achievements is the successful installation of a 5G tower on the Siachen Glacier—the highest battlefield in the world—underscoring India’s technological capability and commitment to inclusive growth.
The initiative has been met with widespread appreciation from local residents, who now see mobile connectivity not just as a service, but as a transformative lifeline that fosters dignity, development, and opportunity.
This visionary effort by the Indian Army reinforces its role not just as defenders of the nation’s borders, but as key drivers of development and integration. It exemplifies the spirit of Viksit Bharat – India@2047, where no region is left behind in the journey towards progress.
