Army, DRDO Successfully Test Army Version of MRSAM with Four Direct Hits

Odisha, April 4: The Indian Army and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted four successful flight-tests of the Army version of the Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) on April 3 and 4, 2025, from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the operational flight trials were carried out against high-speed aerial targets and resulted in direct hits, demonstrating the missile’s precision and reliability. The four tests targeted objects at varying ranges and altitudes—long-range, short-range, high altitude, and low altitude—validating the missile system’s operational capabilities under different conditions.

The tests were conducted with the missile system in full operational configuration, and performance data was captured using radars and electro-optical tracking systems deployed by the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur.

The trials were executed by Army units from the Eastern and Southern Commands under DRDO’s guidance. Officials stated that the success of these tests marks a significant step toward the full operationalisation of the MRSAM system in two Army Regiments.

Developed jointly by DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), the MRSAM system includes a multi-function radar, command post, mobile launcher, and supporting vehicles. It is designed to neutralise airborne threats including aircraft, drones, and incoming missiles.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Army, and the associated industries for the achievement. “Four successful tests have re-established the capability of the weapon system in intercepting targets at critical ranges,” he said.

Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, also lauded the teams involved. Calling the tests “major milestones,” he said they reflect DRDO’s commitment to strengthening the operational capabilities of the Indian Army.
