India’s defence exports have reached a historic high of ₹23,622 crore ($2.76 billion) in FY 2024-25, registering a 12.04% growth over the previous year. This surge is a significant milestone in India’s quest for self-reliance in defence manufacturing and marks a shift from being an import-dependent nation to a credible arms exporter. While the numbers are encouraging, the road ahead demands sustained efforts in innovation, policy reforms, and global competitiveness.
The rise of indigenous defence manufacturing has been a cornerstone of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for an Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). The Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) have recorded a 42.85% increase in exports, reflecting the growing international demand for Indian defence products. The private sector, which accounted for ₹15,233 crore in exports, has also played a crucial role in making India a global defence player.
This shift is not just about numbers. It signifies the global recognition of India’s capabilities in manufacturing arms, ammunition, subsystems, and components. Today, India exports to over 80 countries, demonstrating a newfound confidence in its indigenous military technology.
Despite the impressive figures, India remains far behind global arms exporters like the U.S., Russia, and France. Defence exports are not just about product quality; they are deeply tied to geopolitics, strategic alliances, and trust in the reliability of a country’s military-industrial complex.
While the government has simplified export policies, challenges remain in scaling up production, reducing bureaucratic delays, and investing in cutting-edge defence technology. The ₹50,000 crore export target by 2029 is ambitious but achievable if India enhances its research and development (R&D), builds strategic partnerships, and ensures timely deliveries.
To maintain and accelerate this growth, India must focus on Strengthening R&D, Faster Approvals & Policy Support, Strategic Global Alliances besides Enhancing Quality & Reliability
India’s record defence exports signal a positive shift in its global standing, but this is only the beginning. With consistent policy execution, increased private sector participation, and a focus on high-tech defence systems, India can emerge as a formidable arms exporter. The vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence is within reach, but it requires sustained commitment and strategic direction to make India a true leader in the global arms market.
