GDC Sumbal Hosts Event to Celebrate ‘World Theatre Day’

Sumbal, March 27, 2025: The Young Dramatists Society Srinagar and Inder Cultural Forum, in collaboration with Government Degree College (GDC) Sumbal on Thursday organises an event to celebrate World Theatre Day 2025.

An official spokesperson said the event titled, “Theatre as a Tool Against Drug Abuse” was attended by theatre artists, academicians, students, and social activists who emphasized the role of theatre in addressing the growing issue of drug abuse.

The event was presided over by the Principal GDC Sumbal Prof. (Dr.) Shabeena Iqbal Shawl while Mohammad Amin Bhat, the President of Adbee Markaz Kamraz, was the Chief Guest.

The programme was graced by several dignitaries, including Abdul Ahad Farhaad, Rashid Rahil, Chief Editor of the Asian Mail Group, and other notable personalities besides the event was attended by faculty members, both teaching and non-teaching, as well as students of the college.

The programme commenced with a group Naat, presented by the students of the college, followed by the felicitation of college Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Shabeena Iqbal Shawl, Guests of Honor Abdul Ahad Farhaad and Rashid Rahil, and Convener, Cultural Committee Dr. Shaista Ahmad for their contributions and support.

Two Dramas were presented as part of the event. The first play, enacted by members of the Inder

Cultural Forum Sumbal, focused on the issue of corruption, drug abuse and the critical roles played by government agencies and law enforcement in curbing these social issues. While, the

Second play, performed by the Young Dramatist Society, was an adaptation of the famous Eliza- bethan tragedy Dr. Faustus written by Sohan Lal Kaul.

In her address, the Principal of the college emphasized the urgent need to raise awareness among the youth to protect them from falling prey to the detrimental effects of drug abuse. She commended the actors for their exemplary performances and elaborated on the transformative power of theatre, stressing its relevance and importance in today’s society as a medium for education and social change.

The guests present on the occasion also shared their thoughts during the event, lauding the hospitality, discipline, and organizational excellence of the college. They expressed their gratitude to the college administration for their unwavering support and cooperation for successfully conducting the event.

The event was moderated by Majeed Majazi and concluded on a high note, reinforcing the message that theatre plays a crucial role in addressing social issues, fostering awareness, and promoting positive change in society.
