GDC Awantipora Organizes Speech Contest on Drug Abuse Under Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan

Srinagar, 20 March : Government Degree College (GDC) Awantipora, in collaboration with Police District Awantipora here on today organized a speech contest on the theme “Drug Abuse – A Scourge” under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. The event was a concerted effort to raise awareness about the rising threat of substance abuse, educate students on the dangers of drug addiction, and emphasize the need for collective action to combat this societal menace.

The event was graced by DSP Maajid Sahab and DSP Rafiq Sahab, who received a warm welcome from the students. The program commenced with a welcome address by Prof. Abdal Ahmad Bhat, who highlighted the severe consequences of drug abuse and acknowledged the Police Department’s vital role in spreading awareness.

A jury panel comprising Prof. Feroz, Dr. Sajad, and Dr. Tawseef was tasked with evaluating the participants. To set the tone for the contest, a documentary by WION was screened, offering a stark visual representation of the drug crisis in the Valley.

A total of 14 students from various semesters delivered compelling speeches, addressing the causes, impact, and solutions to drug addiction. Their thought-provoking insights captivated the audience and shed light on the urgent need for preventive measures. Areeba Akbar (BG 4th Semester) secured the first position, followed by Insha Mushtaq (BG 4th Semester) in second place, and Muqadas Jan (BG 6th Semester) in third place.

The winners were honored with certificates of merit and mementos, while all participants received certificates of appreciation. In a special gesture, a specially-abled student who took part in the contest was awarded a cash prize by the esteemed guests, recognizing his resilience and determination.

Delivering the vote of thanks, DSP Maajid Sahab provided a law enforcement perspective on drug abuse, lauding the students for their enthusiastic participation and urging them to become ambassadors of change in their communities.

The event was efficiently conducted by Prof. Abdal Ahmad Bhat, ensuring smooth proceedings throughout. The contest not only provided students with a platform to express their concerns but also reinforced the collective responsibility required to tackle the drug menace.
