REC Foundation to Fund 8,000 Free Cataract Surgeries Under ‘Eye Care for All’ Initiative

Chennai, Feb 18: REC Limited-a Maharatna CPSE under the Ministry of Power has pledged to sponsor as many as 8000 free cataract surgeries under its “Eye Care for All” initiative for the people from economically weaker sections of the society.

An official spokesperson said REC Limited, through its CSR arm REC Foundation, has signed a Memorandum of Association (MoA) with Sankara Eye Hospital, Pammal, Chennai, committing ₹6.00 crore for the ‘Eye Care for All’ initiative.

He said this project aims to provide free cataract surgeries to 8,000 economically disadvantaged individuals in and around Chennai.

The MoA was formalized on February 17, 2025, between Smt. Thara Ramesh, Chief Program Manager (CPM), REC Regional Office Chennai, and Wg Cdr V. Shankar (Retd), Trustee, Sankara Eye Hospital.

The signing took place in the presence of Narayanan Thirupathy, Director (Independent), REC Limited, along with other officials from REC and Sankara Eye Hospital.

Speaking on the occasion, Narayanan Thirupathy emphasized REC Foundation’s commitment to community empowerment through meaningful CSR initiatives. “Our partnership with Sankara Eye Hospital is a significant step towards eliminating avoidable blindness and improving lives,” he said.
