Young Sand Worker Dies as River Bund Collapses in Pulwama’s Hajibal

Pampore, January 09: A tragic incident unfolded early Thursday morning at Hajibal area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district, as 23-year-old Murtaza Ismail, son of Mohammad Ismail Dar and a resident of Lethpora Pampore, drowned in the Jhelum River while engaged in sand extraction.

According to reports, Murtaza was working when he became trapped under a pile of river bund, leading to his untimely death. The body of the deceased was recovered and taken to SDH Pampore, where a post-mortem was conducted. Later, the body was handed over to his family for the last rites.

A pall of gloom descended on the village when the body of 23 year old Murtaza Ismail arrived home. Heart-wrenching scenes unfolded as people were seen beating their chests to mourn in grief, mourning the untimely loss.

Eyewitness reported that early Thursday morning, Murtaza Ismail and others were busy extracting sand from the Jhelum River in the Hajibal area of Pulwama district. Unfortunately, a part of the river bund collapsed into his boat, causing him to fall into the river and drown. Despite immediate rescue efforts and attempts to take him to the hospital, he could not survive and was declared dead.

Registered Medical Officer (RMO) Dr. Bilal Ahmad told Kashmir Convernor that this morning, at around 8 AM, they received information about an individual named Murtaza Ismail, who was working in the sand extraction in the Hajibal area, and unfortunately died there. The concerned police brought his body to SDH Pampore for medical formalities. After completing the postmortem, the body was handed over to the family.

The incident has left the entire village in mourning, as they come to terms with the loss of a young life.
