Srinagar, Dec 28: The Indian Army contingent, comprising 334 personnel, departed for Nepal on Thursday to participate in the 18th edition of the Battalion-Level Joint Military Exercise Surya Kiran. The exercise is scheduled to be held in Saljhandi, Nepal, from December 31, 2024, to January 13, 2025.
Led by a battalion from the 11th Gorkha Rifles, the Indian contingent will train alongside Nepal’s Srijung Battalion in the annual exercise, which alternates between the two countries. The focus of the training will be on enhancing interoperability in jungle warfare, counter-terrorism operations in mountainous regions, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief under the United Nations Charter.
The exercise aims to strengthen operational preparedness through sessions on aviation, medical training, and environmental conservation. It also provides an opportunity for the troops of both nations to share experiences, refine combat skills, and enhance coordination in challenging scenarios.
This edition of Surya Kiran follows high-level visits, including Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi’s visit to Nepal and Nepal Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel’s visit to India. The joint training underscores the strong ties of friendship, trust, and cultural linkage between the two countries, reflecting their commitment to broader defense cooperation and shared security objectives.
The exercise is seen as a key initiative to bolster bilateral relations and operational collaboration between India and Nepal.
