Srinagar, December 20: To celebrate the International Pheran Day, the Indian Army launched an initiative of distributing traditional Pherans to underprivileged families in far-flung villages near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kashmir Valley.
Defence Spokesperson in Srinagar told Kashmir Convener the distribution aims to provide relief to vulnerable populations during the harsh winter period, as Chillai Kalan sets in, with sub-zero temperatures gripping the region.
Chillai Kalan is the 40-day period of harshest winter in Kashmir starting from December 21. The first day of this Cold Spell is celebrated by Social Media Users in Kashmir as International Pheran Day.
The Defence Spokesperson said the Pheran, a symbol of Kashmiri identity and resilience, offers much-needed warmth and comfort during the coldest time of the year.
“The Army’s initiative was in recognition of International Pheran Day, celebrated on December 21, a day dedicated to the cultural and emotional significance of this iconic attire,” he added.
The Pheran, deeply embedded in Kashmiri culture, is especially cherished during Chillai Kalan. Since 2021, the day has been celebrated across Kashmir, with events held at Srinagar’s Ghanta Ghar and SKICC, showcasing the timeless attire through fashion shows featuring local personalities and specially-abled individuals.
During the day-long drive by the Indian Army, Local volunteers actively joined hands with the distribution, helping to identify families in need and ensuring that the Pherans reached the most deserving individuals.
“The distribution brought joy to elders and children alike, with smiles reflecting the spirit of generosity and warmth that defined the initiative,” spokesperson added.
The distribution drive has been widely appreciated by locals, who commended the Army’s efforts in promoting care and compassion alongside its duties of security and stability.
