Srinagar: The Division of Silviculture & Agroforestry (SAF), Faculty of Forestry, SKUAST-Kashmir, Benhama Ganderbal, inaugurated its second one-week training programme on “Entrepreneurship Development through Scientific Cultivation and Value Addition of Wicker Willows” on December 6, 2024.
The programme, funded by MSME, was held at the Mission N Coaching Centre, Kangan Ganderbal, and the Faculty of Forestry, Benhama Ganderbal.
The event saw active participation from over 30 attendees, including unemployed youth, farmers, students, and NEET aspirants from the coaching centre. Dr. Nazir A. Pala, Associate Professor and Programme Coordinator, opened the session with an introductory address, emphasizing the economic potential of the wicker industry in Ganderbal.
He highlighted that many families in the district earn their livelihood through wicker-based entrepreneurship and value addition.
Dr. G.M. Bhat, Head of the Division of SAF, discussed nursery development, planting techniques, and the importance of quality planting material. Dr. Tariq Rather, Assistant Professor, provided insights into scientific cultivation and nursery management of wicker willows, while Dr. Megna Rashid, Scientist, highlighted the vital role of women in the wicker industry.
The programme includes practical training sessions, field visits, and demonstrations of wicker-based products. Dr. Pala thanked the MSME, university administration, Nodal Officer, Director Planning and Monitoring Prof. Haroon Naik, and Dean Faculty of Forestry for their support in making this initiative successful.
