DSEK Faces Backlash Over Failure to Include Vocational Subjects in Exam Schedule

Srinagar, Nov 9: The Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) has once again failed to include vocational subjects in the date sheet for summative assessments of students upto Class 9th.

Concerned parents while flagging the mistake, stated that this callous attitude of DSEK speaks about their seriousness about skill development.

Last year the Directorate was forced to release a revised datasheet for after they failed to include Vocational Subject in their date sheet.

As per Datesheet, Examination are scheduled to begin on November 25. The exams, covering classes 1st Primary to Class 9, will end on December 12.

J&K (UT) Vocational Trainers Welfare Association on Saturday also criticised the DSEK for alleged callous attitude and said that Vocational education is being pursued by over 2 lakh students across 15 trades in more than 1300 high and higher secondary schools in Jammu and Kashmir and is a vital component of the UT’s educational framework.

Despite its growing significance, especially under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the omission of vocational subjects continues to raise concerns about the Government’s commitment to skill development.

“The exclusion of vocational subjects once again shows a lack of seriousness towards skill-based education, which is central to the NEP 2020,” Association said in a social media post. “It reflects poorly on the state’s ability to implement national reforms in the education sector.”

The Vocationalisation of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education scheme, a central initiative by the Ministry of Education, mandates the inclusion of vocational subjects as part of the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF).

The framework is designed to ensure that vocational subjects are not only taught but are also assessed and certified at national standards. The failure to include these subjects in the class 9 date sheet suggests a lapse in fulfilling the objectives of this policy.

With vocational subjects being introduced at the 9th class level, corresponding to NSQF Level-1, the exclusion of these subjects from the exam schedule undermines the government’s vision for skill development, parents alleged.

`Vocational Trainers said this oversight could delay the progress of students in vocational education, which is critical for their future career prospects.

However a top DSEK Official while talking to Kashmir Convener said Exam for vocational subject will be held immediately after December 06.

After Kashmir Convener took the matter with Directorate, Director School Education Kashmir issued a separate datesheet notification notifying that the examination for Vocational subject will be held after December 06 after the summative assessment for current academic session.
