Bandipora, October 01: Independent candidate from Bandipora Usman Majid, who is contesting the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections from Bandipora, had to cast his vote in Sonawari constituency—courtesy delimitation commission of 2020.

On Tuesday when Majid along with his family arrived at Garoora polling station, he looked disheartened and disappointed.

Living in Garoora Village of Bandipora, the village was detached from Bandipora constituency and connected to Sonawari Constituency besides neighboring villages including Aragam, Nadihal and Ajas.

Political analysts said the delimitation affected Usman Majid as a chunk of his vote bank was removed from Bandipora constituency. Despite that Usman Majid decided to contest from Bandipore constituency where he was elected to legislative assembly twice in the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir.

While casting Vote at Government Boys High School Garoora, Majid criticized the delimitation process calling it arbitrary and unjust. “They did sheer injustice during the delimitation exercise. They randomly cut areas from Bandipora and added them to Sonawari, and vice versa. I don’t think it is in any way justified,” he lamented, expressing concerns about the impact of these changes on local representation.

Despite the personal inconvenience, Majid was encouraged by the high voter turnout in both constituencies. “People are voting in large numbers, which is a positive sign for democracy. There was a disconnect between the people and the administration, but now they have realized the importance of their vote,” he said. He expressed optimism that the electorate will choose a representative who will genuinely work for the people’s welfare.

The Bandipora constituency, known for its strategic importance, is witnessing a close contest between Majid and joint Candidate of Indian National Congress Nizam-ud-din Bhat.
