The second edition of Naval Commanders’ Conference of 2024 is scheduled at New Delhi from 17 to 20 Sep 24. The Conference is the Apex level biannual event facilitating deliberations on significant strategic, operational and administrative issues between the Naval Commanders. Held against the backdrop of evolving geo-political and geo-strategic dynamics, regional challenges and complexity in maritime security situations in West Asia, the Conference plays a crucial role in shaping the future course of the Indian Navy. In the context of growing regional tensions, these discussions will likely focus on enhancing the Navy’s role as a key player in securing India’s maritime borders and interests, particularly in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). A key agenda of the conference is the Navy’s indigenisation drive, aligning with the national vision of ‘Aatmanirbharta’ by 2047. The Indian Navy has made remarkable progress in reducing its dependence on foreign military imports, and ongoing efforts under the ‘Make in India’ initiative are vital for ensuring long-term self-reliance. The review of naval projects at the conference will be crucial in steering the Navy toward becoming a fully indigenised, combat-ready force capable of addressing contemporary and future threats, such as drones and missile attacks that jeopardize maritime trade routes. As India asserts its role as a “Preferred Security Partner” in the IOR, the Navy’s preparedness and capability enhancement plans will be scrutinized to ensure India’s continued leadership in regional security. The Naval Commanders’ Conference will serve as a cornerstone for shaping the future of India’s maritime strategy, bolstering not only national security but also global stability in an increasingly volatile world. The conference showcases the Indian Navy’s commitment to staying a “combat-ready, credible, cohesive, and future-ready force.” The deliberations and strategic decisions made in this high-level forum will go a long way in securing India’s maritime interests and promoting a self-reliant defense ecosystem.
