Srinagar, Mar 14: With the arrival of spring, horticulture activities are picking up in the Valley but the lack of water for irrigation purposes is causing problems to orchardists.
According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), in Bijbehara, Dadi canal irrigates hundreds of acres of orchards and every year authorities carry out its repair including desilting and plugging any breaches. But the work is carried out with the arrival of spring when farmers need irrigation for their field, hence affecting farming activities.
Currently, growers have to spray mineral oils to their orchards besides other works.
In Bijbehara, they blamed authorities for taking up repair works in water canals lately instead of lean season which is October or November, when no irrigation is required to farmers.
Besides, farmers reason out that work carried out in spring is not durable as water is immediately allowed to pass through canals.
An official said the water supplies in the Dadi canal has been restored as the canal has been charged today on 14-03-2022 and has been preponed from earlier scheduled date of 20-03-2022.
He said that the water supplies has been restored in view of public demand put by beneficiaries of various villages like Dadoo, Marhama, Sirhama, Waghama.
The various important repair works being executed at Kathsoo and near Nowshehra in the dadi canal have been stopped in the interest of general public and will be taken up for completion after 17-03-2022, he added.
He requested the farmers/orchadists of the area to complete their necessary orchad spray during this period—(KNO)
