Bandipora, June 29: District Youth President Bandipora Jammu Kashmir Apni Party today expressed concern over the increasing tendency in civilians for suicide in Kashmir valley.
In a statement, Wasif said Suicides by young people in the prime of life continue is a matter of concern. "Suicide rates are increasing significantly in young adults including male, female and in a wider population".
Every suicide is a tragedy that affects families, communities and entire countries and has long-lasting effects on the people left behind.
There are many reasons for people attempting suicide. These reasons may include parental pressure, academic failure, lack of moral and religious education, mental illness, traumatic stress, drugs, loss or fear of and hopelessness, Wasif Said.
Suicides are preventable, however. Effective and evidence-based interventions can be implemented at population, sub-population and individual levels to prevent suicide and suicide attempts. We can control suicide attempts by reducing access to the means of suicide (e.g. pesticides, firearms, certain medications), reporting by media in a responsible way, school-based interventions, introducing policies to reduce the harmful use of alcohol, early identification, treatment and care of people with mental and substance use disorders.
Wasif Mir appealed to the people, especially the youth and women to launch a comprehensive awareness campaign to rid the Kashmiri society of these serious problems and pave the way for the prevention of such menaces.
