Class work suspended after protest from non-teaching staff
Srinagar, May 25, CNS: Normal business at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar was completely disrupted after non-teaching staff staged massive protest outside Director’s office. The non-teaching staff even snapped the power supply and locked the doors of library and laboratory even as some teaching staff members refused to attend the exam duties.
The non-teaching and some teaching staff are up in arms against the NIT administration for not filling up the posts of Deputy Registrars and Assistant Registrars. They have even been alleging that most of the staffers in the Institution have been re-employed after their retirement under political pressure.
“NIT Srinagar which was among the top 100 institutes of India in 2016 pulled out of the race in January this year and did not even apply for the ranking considering the conditions at the institute. Deputy Registrar and Assistant Registrar posts are lying vacant. Retired employees are being re-employed under political consideration and they are ruling the roost. There is the sister of one legislator who had been retired but re-employed as Research Lab. Even the incumbent Registrar has made entry into institution through re-employment. The Institution is on the verge of destruction,” a protester told news agency CNS.
Due to protest, students didn’t attend their classes. The protesting staffers alleged that the in-charge Director NIT is an ornamental head who is unable to impose his authority. “There is nothing in his hands and he is unable to take any decision,” the protesters said and threatened to call for an indefinite strike if pristine glory of the college is not restored.
“Chairman NIT Srinagar is following a different political ideology and he is least bothered about the welfare of this Institution. NIT Srinagar exists by name only and there is nothing to boast about it,” they said.
M.J. Zarabi, Chairman NIT Srinagar declined to comment on the issue while Registrar admitted that there are some problems being faced by non-teaching staff. He also admitted that important posts are lying vacant in the Institution. (CNS)
