No proposal to provide identity certificate to West Pak refugees in JK: MHA

‘WPRs are Indian Citizens

New Delhi, Feb 08 (KNS): Union Home Ministry has clarified that central government has no proposal to grant domicile certificate to West Pakistan (WP) refugees in Jammu and Kashmir. The clarification came in a written reply from junior Ministers of Home Hansraj Gangaram Ahir and Kiren Rijiju said. In written replies to questions by Amar Singh of Samajwadi Party and Majeed Memon of NCP in the Rajya Sabha (RS) Wednesday the ministers said that there is no “specific proposal” of providing “nativity and identity certificate” to WP refugees.
The Jammu and Kashmir has reported that there is “no such proposal at present to grant domicile certificate” to them (WP) refugees.
However, the written reply said that the West Pakistan refugees settled in Jammu and Kashmir are Indian citizens.
Ahir said the State Government has reported that “there is no such proposal at present under consideration of the State Government for the West Pakistan refugees”.
Singh and Memon had asked whether the Centre is aware that the State Government had recently decided to issue “nativity and identity certificates to about 1.5 lakh refugees for erstwhile Pakistan.
It may be recalled that some mainstream political parties and separatists reacted sharply when there were reports that state government is planning to issue identity cards to WP refugees.
The centre has Tuesday this week made it clear that there is no proposal to set up separate townships for Kashmiri who migrated to different parts of the country, including Jammu following eruption of militancy in early 90s. (KNS)
