Srinagar, Jan 17 (KNS): While the snowfall has already crippled life across the valley, the patients admitted in the government Medical College (GMC) associated hospitals are facing immense hardships owing to the shortage of essential medicines and absence of night staff.
The inadequate power supply has extended miseries to the patients while the frequent absence of night staff has marred functioning of the hospitals leaving the patients at risk.
Sources told KNS that the night staff members, including the Resident Medical Officers (RMOs), are supposed to remain present in the hospital for the night shift, but from last one week not a single RMO remains present.
“No Resident Medical Officer (RMO) remains present in the hospital for the night shift that starts from 4:00 PM to 11:00 AM. At least one RMO has to be present in the hospital for the night. But from some last 12 days we have not seen any RMO here for the night shift. They prefer to sit at home to escape from the biting cold,” sources said.
Some employees blamed the hospital higher ups for the mess saying they had requested their concerned Medical Superintendents to provide ambulances and other vehicles for the staff in times of snow.
“We have no other option. We reach late and leave early in the evening,” said most of the employees in electric and drug sub-departments of GB Pant and SMHS hospitals.
“Due to these fluctuations in the electricity, the oxygen supply to the Intensive care unit (ICU) gets disrupted. It has to be sorted out before it leads to a tragedy,” a doctor in the ICU said.
When contacted GMC principal said he has no such information as of now. “If our night staff skips the night duty roaster we will definitely look into the matter.” (KNS)
