Illegal soil extraction goes unabated in Hajin

Srinagar, Nov 17 (KNS): Amid unrest, the residents of Hajin area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Thursday alleged that illegal soil extraction goes on unabated in river Jhelum in their area while the authorities are acting as mute spectator.
According to KNS correspondent, the residents alleged that illegal soil extraction goes on in Jhelum River and dozens of tippers of mud are dug out from the river threatening the lives of villagers residing near the embankment of river Jhelum.
Suhail Ahmad, one of the locals of Asham Sonawari said that they have already suffered tremendous loss in the 2014 deluge. “We must not be forced to suffer the same loss again. We appealed to the higher ups in this regard but nothing has been done in this regard,” they said.
He informed KNS that some ‘blue eyed’ persons have started illegal extraction of soil near banks of river Jehlum at Asham, Baharabad areas of Bandipora.
The residents later appealed higher ups to look into the matter and redress their genuine grievances.
They said that they had already staged protests against such happenings but unfortunately nothing has been in this regard thereby some norm violators continue to extract soil in the area.
Executive Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control Sumbal, Ghulam Jeelani told KNS that he will look into the matter.
“I will send a team there and strict action will be taken against the person involved in such happenings,” Jeelani said. (KNS)
