Jammu | May 19 (PTK): A team of Food Safety Officers headed by Assistant Commissioner Food Safety District Srinagar today destroyed 1100 kgs of mangoes that were found to be treated with a harmful chemical Calcium Carbide for quick ripening.
The team raided Parimpora Mandi and inspected stock of various Wholesale Fruit dealers. During the inspection some of them were found in possession of mango boxes in which the pouches of Calcium Carbide as ripener were found. The use of this chemical which releases acetylene gas is prohibited under food Safety & Standards Act. 1100 Kgs (One thousand & one hundred Kgs) of such mangoes were destroyed on the spot.
Dealers were warned to desist from such unethical trade practice or face stern action under FSS Act that also includes closure of their business units. (PTK)
