Bandipora, May 05:- Aragam Kul -The prime source of irrigation for thousands of acres of paddy field and orchards of Argam village face threat of extinction owing to growing pollution in the canal.
Locals said all the garbage of the villages of Aragam belt is dumped in the canal thus choking it that will endanger the crop of thousands of acres of land.
Aragam Kul which was considered as one of the famous pure water Kul of Bandipora is now choked with Polyehthne bags and garbage. With garbage dumped inside one cannot escape the foul smell that fills the air.
Locals said due to the negligence of Irrigation and Flood Control department it lost its heritage, as they are not doing their duties properly. “ Few inhabitants of the said area throw garbage in said nallah and make it nuisance for the farmers as well as other villagers,” he said.
One of the villager Javid Ahmad from chitteybandy said that the connecting bridge of villages Chitteybandy and Aragam now become garbage site and now it becomes difficult for the inhabitants to move freely because of the foul smell.
Villagers request District Development Commissioner Bandipora to look into the matter personally and direct Irrigation and Flood control department to take immediate measures so that we cant suffer more.
Assistant Executive Engineer I&FC Gulzar Ahmad said they have started cleaning the canals and will take few days to restore the irrigation canals. He said their motive is to restore all the canals sothat farmers are benefited. He appealed people not to throw garbage in canals as they are indirectly getting affected by choking these canals.
