Govt gears up for Agriculture Census

Jammu | Mar 28 : Financial Commissioner Revenue (FCR), Pramod Kumar Jain on Monday chaired a high-level meeting of all the Deputy Commissioners of Kashmir region to review the process of carrying out the Agricultural census.

“The GOI has been conducting quinquennial Agriculture Censuses since 1970-71 that provides crucial information on the structural aspects of Indian Agriculture which continues to be the main stay of Indian economy. The concepts and definitions used in Indian Agriculture Census are broadly in conformity with those adopted in the world census of Agriculture,” FCR, Pramod Kumar Jain informed the officials.

He said the Agriculture Census in India relies heavily on the system of Land Records as prevalent in large part of the country. An Agricultural operational holding is the ultimate unit for taking decision for development of Agriculture at micro level and it is for this reason that an operational holding is taken as the statistical unit of data collection for describing the structure of agriculture. He said that periodic Agriculture Census is important as this is the main source of information on basic characteristics of operational holdings such as Land Use and Cropping Patterns, Irrigation and Tenancy Particulars, he maintained.

He said that the supervision plays an important role in improving the quality of the data collected through census and an effective supervision shall be organized at different levels to ensure that the various Phases of Agr. Census work is carried out according to the prescribed time schedule and instructions. The supervision has to be done by two categories of staff viz I. Administrative and Statistical,” he said.

He directed that the administrative supervision has to be done by Revenue Inspectors, Deputy/ Naib –Tehsildars and SDO. Revenue Inspectors should inspect the work of tabulation done by Patwaries in each Patwar Circle.
