Seminar on ‘information security, electronic systems’ begins at KU

Srinagar, Mar 18: A national seminar on electronic devices and information security began at the University of Kashmir on Friday.
The two-day seminar ‘Electronic Devices, Systems and Information Security’ has been organized by the varsity’s Department of Electronics and Instrumentation Technology and sponsored by the University Grants Commission.
Prof Ramesh Gaonkar, renowned professor of Electrical Engineering Technology at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse New York, was chief guest at the seminar.
In his address, Prof Gaonkar said such conferences have assumed huge importance in the present times when “technology is changing rapidly our way of thinking and living.”
He however said “while our aim should be to catch up with the latest technological innovations happening around the world, we must ensure our research and technological innovations are designed and focused to cater to the local needs of millions of poor people living in our own country.”
Prof Gaonkar said: “We must also understand that we should not always keep on looking at what advanced countries like the US are doing. Their models and designs of research and innovations may or may not fit into our places. Since 60-70 percent population of India lives in rural areas and villages, their needs may be entirely different from those living in advanced countries like the US. Therefore our scientific pursuits must be aimed at serving these millions of people first.”
He urged young scientists and researchers to catch up with the latest technological innovations.
Dean of Academic Affairs at KU, Prof M A Wani said: “According to Technological Determinism, technology shapes our polity, economy, governance, environment and what not and therefore the role of technology, technologists, and scientists is of paramount importance in today’s world and a game-changer in bringing about transformation in the society.”
Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology and Seminar Convener, Prof G M Bhat delineated the aims and objectives of the seminar. “It’s an opportunity for young students and scholars to share their ideas and findings with the experts in the fields of science and technology and learn from their rich experiences,” he said.
Earlier, Dr M Tariq Banday, Coordinator at the Department of Electronics and Instrumentation Technology and organizer of the seminar highlighted its various themes. “The deliberations would help young students and scholars to a great extent in understanding various concepts of electronic devices and allied security systems,” he said.a955905694059803120503639047025
