First ever student-led career counselling cell established in Bandipora

Bandipora, March 14: Govt Girls Higher Secondary School Bandipora- one of the premier and oldest institute of the town on Monday became the first school in J&K state to have a student-run career counselling cell.

This cell was established by Prof. Yaqoob Khan and his organization “Youth Pulse” in association with the Directorate of School Education, Kashmir.

Sadashiv N who is deputed in Bandipora district as Prime Minister Rural Development (PMRD) Fellow said the aim of the counselling is to help students to identify their strong areas in academics. “The plan is to conduct regular assessments of students on various parameters so that students from Class IX to XII can have a better idea of career choices based on their abilities than just the regular Engineering, Medicine or generic graduation,” he said.

“We will conduct different aptitude tests in different streams that will help us to know the week as well as strong areas of an individual which will ultimately help the student in the longer run,” he said adding that earlier student would chose subjects randomly but this process will help them to chose their line themselves.

Sadashiv said the cell will act as a bridge between the Youth Pulse team and the students.  “Separate records would be maintained for each student so that the school gets a comprehensive picture of abilities and talents of all students,” he added.

On Monday the Youth Pulse team conducted a screening test of nearly thousand students to understand children’s aptitude. The PMRD fellow said in coming weeks, such cells will be set up in all High Schools and Higher Secondary schools of the District.
