‘Kashmir witnesses hottest day after 76 years”

Srinagar | Feb 24 : After 76 years, Kashmir witnessed the hottest day in February as the mercury rose to 20.6 degrees Celsius in Srinagar, which is 10 degrees above the normal.

The month of February which is the last month of winter season mostly remains colder with periodic snowfall and rain fall, but this time around especially today, the mercury was too hot. However, Director MeT, Sonam Lotus said there was nothing to worry. He said it is not any indication of climatic change.

“Such things happen. When this had happened 76 years before, why can’t today. There were no such dramatic climatic changes in 1940’s. There is nothing that shows any sign of concern,” he told PTK on phone.

It may be recalled that Srinagar had recorded a high of 20.6 degrees Celsius in the month of February in 1940. After a gap of 76 years, the same temperature was recorded yesterday.

“We announced this unusual increase in temperature only to keep it in the records the way it was kept in 1940, he said. The rise in temperature is presently 11 degrees above normal and is expected to rise further due to clear skies. Minor variation in the weather condition can change the trend,” Lotus said.
