Clashes in Pulwama after militant, civilian killed

‘DySP IRP among 17 security men injured’

Srinagar, Jan 20 (KNS): Clashes between police and protesters erupted Wednesday in Naina village in Pulwama district after a civilian was killed during protests and a militant was killed in an encounter with security forces.
Eyewitnesses said that angry protesters which gathered in Naina village-15 km from Pulwama town- clashed with security forces against the killing of the militant and the civilian. They said two more civilian were injured who were rushed to hospital. Police said the two injured civilians are stable.
The injured civilian were rushed to SDH Awantipora, but Parvaiz succumbed to his injuries on way to hospital, witnesses said.
Police said that 17 security men, including DySP of 18 Bn. IRP,Nazir Ahmed Ganai, who sustained multiple fractures in his leg. A police vehicle was also set ablaze by the unruly mob, a police spokesman said.
The spokesman said the civilian, Parvaiz Ahmad Guroo of Naina received firearm injuries and he succumbed of them later. The militant has been identified as Shariq Ahmad Bhat of Brow Bandana, Panzgam.
“Security forces exercised maximum restraint and 17 security force personnel got injured – including Nazir Ahmed Ganai, DySP of 18 Bn. IRP who sustained multiple fractures in his leg. A police vehicle was also set ablaze by the unruly mob. During the uncontrolled rioting, three rioters got firearm injuries, out of which, one Parvaiz Ahmed Guroo resident of Naina later succumbed to his injuries. The condition of other two rioters is said to be stable. Case FIR No. 10/16 and 11/16 stand registered in PS Pulwama and investigation is on,” the spokesman said.
Witnesses said the gunbattle had destroyed the house in which the militant was hiding. More than 50 civilians were trapped due to cross firing in a nearby mosque on Tuesday evening, which, the police said, were “rescued safely by the Pulwama police”. (KNS)
