The deadlock between Pulwama residents and the district administration over plaque ‘memorial for militants’ ended Wednesday after 14-days shutdown by the people.
Deputy Commissioner, Pulwama, Neeraj Kumar, said that the traders, some youth and the Auqaf representatives held a meeting with Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Asgar Samoon, IGP Kashmir, Syed Javaid Mujtaba Geelani in Srinagar to end the stalemate.
“The traders agreed to call off the shutdown from tomorrow (Thursday) after the administration committed to fulfill their demands too. The locals will install a simple board at the park after the situation gets normal. And the 36 youth who have been arrested by police for creating law and order will be released today evening,” Kumar said.
Confirming the decision taking in the meeting with top officials, Mohammad Akram Dar, imam of Jamia Masjid, Pulwama, said that traders federation, Auqaf committee, transport union and some youth representatives of the town participated in the meeting.
“We have called off the strike after the administration accepted the demands of installing the board and releasing the arrested youth,” Dar said.
The district was paralysed from the last two weeks due to the obstinacy between the locals and the administration over the installation of plaque ‘memorial for militants’, at Saheed Park in busy Rajpora Chowk in the town, who have been killed in encounters with security forces in the last year.
Consistent denial by the administration compelled the traders and Auqaf committee to relent from their demand of erecting a plaque to just installing just a board at the park.
The traders and transporters suffered losses worth crores in their trade during the shutdown.
