Srinagar, Dec 31, CNS: The inhabitants of Chadoora town and its adjacent hamlets in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district Thursday staged a massive protest against over implementation of a water supply scheme in the town. Hundreds of inhabitants assembled at Press Enclave Srinagar and amid anti-government slogans said that despite vehement opposition from the people the government continued to lay water supply pipelines for influential people of Airport and adjoining areas and if the scheme is implemented there will be a drought like situation in Budgam.
The protesters told CNS that two water supply pipelines each 24 inches in width which are being laid from Branwad area to old Airport would cause acute water shortage during the peak irrigation season for residents of around 51 villages. They said that water supply scheme which is being lifted from Doodh-Ganga river for influential VIP’s living around Airport road and adjoining areas is likely to affect paddy cultivation, maize, vegetables and fruits on an approximate area of 650 Hectares of land of District Budgam. “We are on roads from past two weeks to stop government from implementing this scheme while officials are also aware of bad consequences of lifting Water from Doodh Ganga river but since water supply pipelines are for VIPs so they have no option except to use lathicharge and tear gas shelling to stop us from Protesting but we won’t let them do it come what may,” Master Maqoobl said and appealed government to halt the ongoing work in the Sogam Chadoora.
