Brief profile:

Poet, Critic, Scholar, Academician, Stalwart, and Professor- Abdul Rashid Nazki is the grand old man and a living legend of not just Kashmiri Adab but all of Kashmiri culture and Islamic mysticism. He grew in the age when learning was not gleaned from books alone but distilled, drop by drop from the press of life and living.

Born on September 18, 1931 in Bandipora, a town which is popular for three things- Alim (Education), Adab (literature) and Aab (Water), Nazki sipped the wine of Alim and adab from the very early age on the Banks of fresh water streams of Arin and Madhumati.

He did an M.A. in Kashmiri from Kashmir University where he later taught Kashmiri, Persian and Iqbaliyat. Nazki has a unique poetic voice which brings metaphysical and transcendental concerns to the moods and themes of Kashmiri poetry.

One of Nazki’s most famous and widely acclaimed poetic collection is
“Vahraat”, for which He got Sahitya Academy Award in 1999. His poems
offer a unique insight into a mind, shaped by the mystics and Rishi philosophy. Rashid Nazki dedicated *Vahraat* to “those who now have no name”.

The Kashmiri Icon Nazki has the credit of the first book-Mazhabi Rehnuma- in Kashmiri on the life and message of religious leaders of the world.
