RDD launches Cleanliness drive in Garoora

‘Ensure Polyehthne free villages’

Garoora, Nov 28: Rural Development Department on Saturday launched cleanliness drive in Garoora village as part of ‘My Village My World’ campaign launched by Minister for Rural Development.

During the campaign, students and the residents assembled together to clean link roads in village including Bachinar, Darzi Mohallah, Gadkul.

Students collected used Polyehthne from the roads and dumped them. Locals pledged to make their villages Polyehthne free and said the Polyehthne won’t be allowed in village henceforth.

In August this year, government launched an all-out war against the use of Polythene in the state and empowered Block Development Officers (BDO) and Panchayat officers to seize the Polythene and impose fine.

Government has empowered BDO’s and Panchayat Officers to seize the Polythene in their respective jurisdictions.

Minister has also directed the officers to spend the first hour of the day in making their areas Polythene free. “Seize Polythene in your areas and ensure that your respective areas are Polythene free,” he has told officers. The minister is personally monitoring the drive against Polythene.

During the campaign, Panchayat officers said making J&K polythene-free, and upkeep and preservation/conservation of the water resources is the need of the hour for sustainable future.

Residents on the occasion appreciated the move of the RDD officials but also expressed need of proper dumping sites for the disposal. “We have no dumping ground wherein we can dump the waste,” locals said.

Locals alleged that the flood channels connected to Wular have become dumping places for people in absence of proper dumping sites. They said WUCMA should issue dustbins to villages of catchment area to check pollutants before entering into Wular.

Speaking on the occasion one of the volunteers Iqbal Hameed thanked Rural Development Department for imitating programme. He also appreciated the role played by Panchayat officials including Gh Mustafa GRS Garoora, Gh Rasool Inspector Panchayat, Ab. Majeed Dar Secretary Panchayat, Sarpanch and Panchayat members, Mohd Afzal Mir, Zahoor Ahmad wani.

Officials said the cleanliness drives should not be just  a formality but should be done on routine basis to ensure hygienic environment which guarantees a healthy life.

 

Earlier the Minister of Rural Development has reiterated that his ministry will not allow use of polythene in the rural areas of the state. “Government has now empowered BDOs also to seize the polythene. So they should exercise this power,” he added.

 

To boost the campaign in villages, Minister has stated that 10 best performing Panchayats will be awarded on quarterly basis which will exhibit regular cleanliness’ including removal of polythene. “Simultaneously stern action will be taken for non-performing Panchayats,” he added.
