On Wednesday Kashmir convener exposed one more scam in Bandipora and this time it was about the bogus MGNREGA works scam. The report revealed that the department has withdrawn lakhs of rupees meant for providing job guarantee of 100 days to the unskilled and unemployed people of the state by giving them jobs at their doorstep by way of making some productive asset in the village including roads, culverts, playfields etc. However in the fresh scam the field Staff of Rural Development Department has allegedly faked the list of works and the workers to draw money from the state exchequer. The works have been shown on paper only while on ground no such works have been executed. Acting on the expose by the Kashmir Convener, Director Rural Development personally visited the spot on the directions of Minister for Rural Development to find the facts. The director has started the investigation and has assured that the guilty will be punished. In JK Assembly also, the minister assured action after MLA Bandipora raised the issue. No doubt the investigation will be conducted but the past experiences raise apprehensions among the people of the state. Till date the punishment has been either the transfer, suspension or the attachment but time has proved that such actions has not deterred the tainted officials from committing wrong doings including corruption. The government need to act tough against such officials who on ground not only snatch the rights of the people but also help in bringing disgrace to the government. Though the intentions of the government cannot be doubted but the message that goes by going soft against such officials do raise questions over the claims of the government for bringing transparency. Government should take the MGNREGA scam of Bandipora as a special case and punish the guilty so that a message can be send across that government believes in action rather than the rhetoric. If it is established that an official has embezzled public money, why she/he should not go to jail?
