Media Habits of Iranian Students in Mysore City: A Study

 Communication and Media are developing all over the world. Living without media is impossible in this age. India is a big country with large media industry that have amount of circulation and programs in different languages and communities. Iranians from past have been come to India for living, working and studying.

Getting information about Iranian habits on media, quality and quantity of usage is important, because they are people who live in India as a big minority and have some similarities in culture, religion, race and language with Indians. Knowing about this community and making better situation for them to use the media properly, can help to inform, influence, educate and aware them for accepting communication in India and improve the relationship.

The present study evaluates Media habits of Iranian students in Mysore city in the year of 2013 in particular. The main objective of this study is to find out the Media Habits of Iranian students in Mysore city before the widespread use of mobile phones. The chief tool of data collection is interview- schedule by structured questionnaire; and the results show the usage of Internet is the highest, followed by Television and Mobile.

The study indicates that the respondents do not attach much importance to Magazine and Radio. Significantly, most respondents do not rely on local media for news about their districts and constituencies.

Communication and Media are developing all over the world. Living without media is impossible in this age. Media publish, create, and evaluate large amounts of information easily and quickly nowadays. The way people communicate has changed by a variety of media.

The study of media is always a better position to influence the people, when we use the media to learn, work and improve the knowledge of the audience, so first of all we must know the audience entirely. Many researchers explored the media habit of people in various fields, including education, psychology, sociology and politic and found the advantages and disadvantages of using the different media.

The critical importance of access to information and business among the students and other users will be very good at the moment because the world moves towards a knowledge-based society. Iranians from past have been come to India for living, working and studying. Getting information about Iranian habits on media is important, because they are people who live in India as a big minority and have some similarities in culture, religion, race and language with Indians.

The demography of Iranian students, their access to the different media, the quality and quantity of using each media, their purpose of using and more have analyzed. This study can also help us to understand the problem of Iranian Students with media exposure here in Mysore.

 Objectives

The Main objective of this study is to find out the Media Habits of Iranian students in Mysore city.

Specific Objectives

  1. To find out the media habits of Iranian students in the relation to print, electronic and new media.
  2. To asses the purpose of the use of a particular media.

 

Method

The researcher has adopted the survey method considering the diverse nature of the respondents. The total population of Iranian students in Mysore city is four hundred. Out of this sample one hundred of them were consider for the study.

The chief tool of data collection isinterview- schedule, considering the nature of the study, structured questionnaire was administered by the respondents.The results are analyzed and interpreted by taking each dimension of the media separately, that is Newspapers, Magazines, Radio, TV, Internet and mobile phones.

Conclusion

The data analysis revealed the nature and extent Media habits of Iranian students in Mysore city.The study reveals that the consumption of the media is not much high among the Iranian students in Mysore city. In terms of degree of consumption, the usage of Internet is the highest, followed by Television and Mobile.

The study indicates that the respondents do not attach much importance to Magazine and Radio. The usage of e-mail and social networks as tools of communication is high. All the respondents use a mobile phone, but only a small number go on the net through these devices.

The number of respondents employing the Short Messaging Service (SMS) as a mode of communication is high. Significantly, most respondents do not rely on local media for news about their districts and constituencies.In this project one thing is very clear and that is Iranian people do not attention to media mostly.

Social-Media-Marketing-Strategy

In the other word may can tell better that Iranians can not achieve to whatever information they need from the media. They prefer to get news about world issues from international media. Some of them follow Iranian news from Iranian channels itself.Results show Internet, Mobile and TV are most useful here for Iranian people.

They use them to get information, knowledge and following program about the world, India and Iran. are also equally responsible. The new media and social media can be actively set by The non-government organizations for various educational informational purpose as this community is more interested in working on the net and social media.

It needed more close relationship with Iranian to take their attention to the media by give them some opportunities and get familiar with their interests, considers and way of getting information.

 

Limitations

It was not practically possible for the researcher to have access to all the Iranian students in Mysore city due to lack of time and resources. It was also not possible to study the perception of all the stakeholders on the media habits of Iranian students in Mysore city. The usual limitations of the survey method such as time, human inadequacies, resource constraints, recollection and communication were experienced by the researcher.

It was not possible to contact with policy makers and activists associated with Mysore city mainly due to large numbers, lack of time and other constraints. As sampling method was followed in selecting the respondents, much care has been taken to collect the primary data, the memory bias on the part of the respondents cannot be completely ruled out.

 

Suggestions

The present study evaluated the Media Habits of Iranian students in Mysore city in 2013. A similar study can conduct to understand the difference in the media habits of new media among the Iranian students, in course of time.Based on this work, a comparative study of media habits of Iranian students on other cities in India or Iran, or other countries can undertake to compare the media habits  across the times and places.
