5 bandsaw units sealed in bandipora

Bandipora,Jan 16: Forest department on Friday conducted raids on Bandsaw units which were operating illegally in Hakbara area of district Bandipora.
During checking at least five units were sealed on spot which were found operating in violation of rules. The timber issued to beneficiaries from A & B zone depots was also found in the premises of these units in violation of rules which was seized on spot. It is pertinent to note that timber issued in A and B zone Forest Sales depots cannot be crushed at any Bandsaw unit as per the directions of Hon’ble Supreme court. Such timber can be subjected to hand sawing only. The timber in A and B zones is sold at highly subsidized rates by government.
The licenses for primary wood units are issued as per the SRO-103 and the issuing authority is Conservator of Forests. As per the SRO, only those units qualify for license which are located in municipal area, industrial area or located outside the 8Kms of nearby forest area. There are many such units in Bandipora district which are operating illegally and are crushing timber in blatant violation of rules thereby furthering damage to forests.
The forest department has now widened its dragnet by closing down such illegal bandsaw units in their effort to control forest damages. The operation was led by Irfan Rasool, DFO Bandipora who stated that such operation will continue till all such units are permanently closed down.
