Ulema discuss property rights of women, half-widows

Srinagar: In order to deliberate upon the issues related to property rights of women with special reference to half widows and orphans, Ehsaas, an NGO on Thursday organised a consultative meeting with Ulema of the valley.

During the meeting, Ulema discussed various issues regarding the rights of women in Islam. The Ulema presented papers on various issues and rulings in Islam related to the distribution of property.

The speakers termed the issue ‘grave’, saying the Ulema need to sit and find a solution to the issue of property rights with regard to the half widows and orphans.

Coordinator of the program Ezabir Ali said the Ulema will come up with a consensus over the issue and issue a joint statement after series of meetings.

The meeting was attended Ulema including Moulana Showkat Husssain Keng, Moulana Ghulam Rasool Hami, Mufti Mohammad Ishaq, Moulana Hakim Sajad Hussain, Syed Rehamn Shams, Mujahid Shabir Falahai and Prof Hamid Naseem Rafiabadi.

The meeting was also attended by members of Civil Society including Dr Altaf Hussain, Shakeel Qalender and Nusrat Andrabi besides members of APDP and their chairperson Parveena Ahanger.

The NGO Ehsaas/KDP, have earlier facilitated to reach a consensus on the issue of half widows wherein the Ulema ruled that women whose husbands go missing — or the Valley’s ‘half-widows’ — can remarry after waiting 4 years.
